Cement Prices in Africa 2026: 7 Markets Compared

Cement costs 3x more in some African countries. Compare real 2026 prices across Egypt, Nigeria, Cameroon and 4 other markets for diaspora builders.

Published July 11, 2026

Here is a number that surprises most people building back home: a 50kg bag of cement can cost three times more in one African country than in another. In Egypt it sits around 2.60 euros. Cross the continent to Cameroon and the same bag reaches nearly 8 euros.

For the diaspora, cement is not a small detail. It is the single biggest material line on almost every build. Walls, foundations, slabs, columns. When you are financing a house from Paris, Berlin or London, a small price gap per bag becomes a large gap across the thousands of bags a house consumes.

In this article we compare the real 2026 price of cement across seven African markets, explain why the biggest producer on the continent is not the cheapest, and show you how to budget so the number on site matches the number in your plan.

The figures below are retail prices for a standard 50kg bag, converted to euros for easy comparison. Local prices are shown too, because that is what your contractor actually pays at the depot.

• Egypt: about 2.60 euros South Africa: about 3.80 euros Ghana: about 4.30 euros Kenya: about 5.20 euros (Sh 750) Ivory Coast: about 5.90 euros (3 900 FCFA) Nigeria: about 6.90 euros (NGN 12 000) Cameroon: about 7.90 euros (5 200 FCFA)

One note on Ivory Coast. The 3 900 FCFA figure is the official capped price for CEM II 42.5. Inside the country, real depot prices sometimes climb higher, so treat it as a floor, not a ceiling.

The Nigerian paradox: big producer, high prices

Nigeria is the largest cement producer in Africa. Its plants can turn out around 85 million tonnes a year, while the country consumes closer to 30 million. On paper, that surplus should push prices down.

It does not. A bag has repeatedly pushed past 12 000 to 13 000 naira in Lagos and other cities. The gap between what Nigeria can make and what Nigerians pay is one of the quiet frustrations of the local building sector.

Several forces drive this. Energy and gas costs feed directly into cement production. A weaker naira raises the price of imported inputs and spare parts. Transport across long distances adds more. And a market dominated by a few large producers leaves little room for price competition.

The talent and the capacity are there. The cost problem sits in energy, currency and distribution, not in the ground. What it means for your build

If you are building in Nigeria, do not assume local production equals cheap materials. Price cement at the current market rate, not at what it "should" cost. The same discipline applies anywhere: the number that matters is today's depot price, confirmed in writing.

Why cement prices swing so much between countries

Four factors explain most of the spread you see above.

• Energy costs. Cement is energy-hungry to produce. Cheap, stable power means cheaper cement. Local production vs imports. Countries that import clinker or finished cement pay for freight and currency risk on top of the base price. Currency strength. A weak local currency inflates every imported input, from machinery to fuel. Transport and distance. A bag trucked far inland costs more than one bought near the plant or port. Market structure. Where a few producers dominate, prices stay firm. Where there is real competition, they ease.

This is why a coastal city near a plant can be far cheaper than an inland town in the same country. When you budget, budget for the specific site, not the national average.

Cement is the second most consumed substance on Earth after water. Africa's construction demand is climbing fast as its cities grow, which keeps cement at the center of nearly every diaspora build. Small percentage moves in the cement price ripple across the whole continent's building costs.

How to budget cement for your project

You cannot control the market. You can control how you plan for it. Here is how serious diaspora builders protect their budget.

• Get the current depot price in writing before you finalize the budget, not a number from last year. Price for your exact site, factoring in distance from the nearest plant or port. Add a 10 to 15 percent buffer for price movement during the build. Ask your contractor to quote cement as a separate line, so you can see it and track it. Confirm the cement grade. A 42.5 grade and a 32.5 grade are not the same product or the same price. Buy in planned phases tied to the construction schedule, to avoid storing bags that harden if rains come. Verify deliveries against invoices. Materials fraud often hides in the gap between what is paid for and what arrives.

That last point is where distance hurts diaspora builders most. When you cannot walk the site, you need someone accountable who can, and a system that ties every payment to verified progress. This is exactly the problem DiasporaBuild was built to solve: verified professionals, milestone payments, and eyes on the ground so your cement budget buys cement, not excuses.

The bottom line for diaspora builders

Cement prices across Africa in 2026 range from about 2.60 euros in Egypt to nearly 8 euros in Cameroon. The lesson is not to chase the cheapest country. It is to budget with real, current numbers for your specific project, and to build with people you can trust to buy honestly on your behalf.

Know your price, plan your buffer, and verify every delivery. That is how a build stays on budget from 6,000 km away.
